This is where we will delve deeper into the hows of learning and teaching. This is a demanding module that is full of a lot of information dealing with learning and teaching. This will deal with Classical Conditioning and Operant Conditioning. Finally, there is a bit on Observational Learning.
Questions for review and discussion in class:
Module 18 Informational Processing (Memory) “To a psychologist, memory is any indication that learning has persisted over time.” (Myers, p. 262). It is certain that memories are a big part of learning. These units will examine how we remember, how we forget and how we can learn to improve our memories. Assignment: You must create a vodcast in which you and your partner teach students ways to improve recall during exams. Our class will select one vodcast which will be broadcasted throughout our school.
In preparation for this assignment do the following exercise. You will be directed to a web page where you will be taking notes. Be sure to develop a strong sense of those parts of the brain responsible for memory, and the sort of memory with which each deals.
Module 21 Language
Be sure to read the entire module. Questions for consideration: Why is important to impart language skills early on in the life of a child? Why is it that people learning a second language as adults keep their native accents? Can we have a L1 personality and a L2 personality that are markedly different? Why is it important in the creation of social equality to have gender neutral terms? Do the great apes have language ability, or are they just immitating their human handlers?
Language learning and acquisition are important concepts to comprehend in this module. We will be looking at language ability/development and if animals can be taught language. Before you go on to read that module, let's take an accent test. This test is really about North American accents, but give http://www.youthink.com/quiz.cfm?action=go_detail&sub_action=take&obj_id=9827
Great apes can have language. Noam Chomsky would argue against this, but there are several cases of gorillas and chimpanzees using sign langage to communicate. For your information only here is an interview with Koko's handler/trainer Dr. Penny Patterson.
Module 22 Intelligence
I.)Multiple Intelligences
Before examining this module we will be doing an assignment on multiple intelligences. To begin, please answer the following questions in preparation for a discussion of about five to ten minutes:
What does it mean to be intelligent in our society?
What abilities do schools value and promote?
How do we measure a person's intelligence?
Howard Gardner
Before we go on consider the following quote by Howard Gardner
In the heyday of the psychometric and behaviorist eras, it was generally believed that intelligence was a single entity that was inherited; and that human beings - initially a blank slate - could be trained to learn anything, provided that it was presented in an appropriate way.Nowadays an increasing number of researchers believe precisely the opposite; that there exists a multitude of intelligences, quite independent of each other; that each intelligence has its own strengths and constraints; that the mind is far from unencumbered at birth; and that it is unexpectedly difficult to teach things that go against early 'naive' theories of that challenge the natural lines of force within an intelligence and its matching domains. (Gardner 1993: xxiii)
Multiple Intelligences
Questions for discussion.
Prepare answers to the following questions regarding the above diagram on multiple intelligences.
Which of the above intelligences is most valued in schools and in society? How do you know?
Is it possible for an individual to have more than one intelligence? Provide support by referring to an example.
Classroom assignment
Read the biographies of all of the following four people: Michael Jordan, Mohandas Gandhi, Charles Darwin, and Oprah Winfrey.
Determine the types of intelligences manifested in each person. Consider what value those types of intelligences have in society.
What do those types indentified above match traditional ideas about intelligence.
Multiple Intelligences at School: You have 15 minutes to come up with how this revelation should have impact on what goes on in schools. Consider how the following activities should be revised:
CONCLUDING ACTIVITY: A Personal Look at Multiple Intelligences
Answer the following questions and turn them in on hard copy. Because these are personal questions I don't want them to be posted, just give them to me for grading and comment. If you so desire to see what sort of intelligence you have, see this website for a test that will let you know http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks3/ict/multiple_int/index.htm
In which of Gardner's intelligences do you believe that you excel? What evidence can you show?
How does this affect the way you currently approach learning and school assignments?
How might the theory of multiple intelligences affect your thinking about your future?
